A man seated shown from the chest up in front of a mural with people and wheels.Context
Arnold Newman, one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century, is often credited as the pioneer of environmental portraiture. In the 1940s, he began developing what was then an “experimental” approach to portraiture by placing his subject within an evocative environment rather than a neutral studio setting. Newman was known to drastically crop his pictures to achieve a more dramatic composition.
Newman is best known for his portraits of artists. This portrait of Marc Chagall (French, born Russia, 1887-1985) bears many of the hallmarks of Newman’s approach: dramatic lighting, rich black and white tonality, and, with Chagall casually seated before one of his paintings, a contextual explanation of the subject’s role and significance.Acquisition
