Context
The subject, Marcel Duchamp (French, 1887-1968), was one of the most significant and influential artists of the 20th century. Duchamp began his career as a painter, but by the 1920s he had rejected what he called “retinal” art and instead dedicated himself to putting art “back to the service of the mind.”
