Cultural abstraction one half blue one half orangeContext
From a portfolio of works in honor of Jose Guerrero, an artist and community leader who impacted his community through printmaking, mural painting, and activism. After Guerrero passed away in 2016, a group of his friends, former students, and colleagues made a portfolio of prints in his memory. The portfolio was organized between 2015-2016 by Héctor Duarte and John Pitman Weber, long-time collaborators of Guerrero and active community artists in Pilsen.
Jose Guerrero is best known for his work in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, where his studio and workshop was a hub for art classes, mural tours, and political organizing. Guerrero was politically outspoken and was inspired by the master Mexican muralists’ ability to skillfully communicate political messages through their murals. He championed the marginalized and overlooked in Chicago and his own community, teaching others about art’s positive impact. Guerrero used his platform as an artist and community organizer to champion the marginalized, fight for worker’s rights, speak out against gentrification and displacement, and celebrate his Mexican and Chicano heritage.Acquisition
