Context

"I worked on the Paintings series between 1994-98. These were works of torn paper that I made by taking color transparency photographs of accidental accumulations of artist paints, on studio floors, walls, or objects, and then converting the images into four-color offset press runs, typically 250 sheets in various dimensions. For each Painting I would bind the entire press run (usually 250 sheets) together, making a block of identical images, before tearing way decreasing portions of each sheet in the block to make a wedge-shaped cross-section. I then glued the sides of this form together, using archival polyvinyl acrylic adhesive (PVA), and mounted it in a wood or metal frame whose base was angled so as to complement the angle of excision in my altered image block. This "correction" by the armature results in a work one inch deep at its left margin and one sheet of paper thick at its right margin but mounted parallel to the wall. the "field" of torn edges distresses the color image, but in such a way as to evoke the tactility of oil paint. Since I have not adhered the "body" of the image block, the field of torn sheets opens up very slightly, with each torn edge shadowing the sheet beneath it." - Spector
