Bernard Silberstein was a editorial photographer and photojournalist who was active in the 1940s and 1950s. The photographs he made in Mexico are some of his most notable. He photographed urban life and traditional rural subjects, but made a focused series of portraits of Mexican artists, particularly muralists. Silberstein’s portraits often depict the artists in front of or working on a mural, filling the frame with dense amounts of information. He regularly employed dramatic lighting and photographed his subjects from a low angle to enhance the sense of drama in the picture.
Silberstein photographed the muralist Roberto Montenegro (Mexican, 1885-1968) in 1943. Montenegro was an early participant in the Mexican muralist movement that followed the Mexican Revolution. His most well known mural was done at the former monastery of San Pedro y San Pablo (now the Museo de la Luz) in Mexico City. Montenegro lost prominence as a muralist since his work lacked the drama of many of his contemporaries like Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. He transitioned to illustration and painting and became an accomplished portrait painter. Montenegro is most notable for his promotion of Mexican handcrafts and folk art.Acquisition
