Context

In Stone Quarry, Ponsen illustrates his interest in landscapes familiar to the American working class during the depression area. The stones are painted in softly rendered brushstrokes in warm grey tones and the sky above the quarry is very faint light blue with both colors emphasizing a welcoming pastoralism to an otherwise cold industrial setting. Though this work is representational, Ponsen employs a painterly approach through gesture and palette.
