Context

This is one of the first pieces in my "Studies in Isolation" work. They function as landscapes in a time when I was questioning my interest in creating large scale sculpture. It has multiple influence including: the chair that originally represented my mothers support during her final years of fighting ovarian cancer (2001), eventually the chair evolved to also include the many isolated people I would come across when I first moved to Chicago. The source of the wood was also important as it was one of my first departures from solely using steel. The wood is from repurposed shipping crates from Ghana used to transport shona stone sculpture to a dealer that was my studio neighbor. I loved the idea of these crudely cut material from Africa used for shipping African artwork. Currently (2016) there are roughly 10 of these type of sculptures. This particular piece was a gift to Chuck when his partner passed.
