This painting portrays the Apothesis, or heavinly glorification, of Louise de Marillac, a long collaborator, and friend of St. Vincent DePaul. They co-founded the Company of the Daughters of Charity (1633). Louise de Marillac was a pioneer in expanding the role of women in the Roman Catholic Church, as well as establishing the basis for modern social work. Louise was canonized on March 11, 1934. Pope John XXIII proclaimed her the patron saint of all Christian social workers in 1960. This painting hung in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome during her beatification ceremony on May 9, 1920
