As a child growing up in Chicago’s
Little Village neighborhood, Elsa Muñoz
constructed fantastical, nature-based safe
havens as a means of counteracting
isolation and her limited access to nature.
Muñoz explains: “I’m always fundamentally
seeking to call upon and transmute my earliest
encounters with the natural world—imaginary
encounters which filled me with wonder and
longing.” The Great Turning is part of the series
Controlled Burns where Muñoz articulates
the climate crisis and honors the efficacy
of indigenous practices that offer healing
techniques for both nature and the mind.

Cuando era una niña en el vecindario
Little Village de Chicago, Elsa Muñoz
construía refugios fantásticos basados
en la naturaleza como una manera de
contrarrestar el aislamiento y su acceso
limitado a la naturaleza. Muñoz explica:
“En esencia siempre estoy buscando recurrir
a mis encuentros más tempranos con el
mundo natural y transmutarlos; encuentros
imaginarios que me llenaban de asombro y
anhelo”. El gran viraje forma parte de la serie
Quemaduras controladas, en que Muñoz
articula la crisis climática y honra la eficacia de
las prácticas indígenas que ofrecen técnicas
de sanación para la naturaleza y para la mente.
