A picture of a mirror reflecting two legs with a painting covering the top half of a seated figure.Context
From her series The Relatives, The Painter was composed solely from objects in Selina Trepp’s Chicago studio between July 2010 and May 2011. The series focuses on Trepp’s relationship to painting, the descendent of a mother and grandmother who were both painters. Coincidentally, Trepp received news that she was pregnant early on in the project, so it also serves as a documentation of her pregnancy.
Before beginning these works, Trepp set herself a three-part assignment, a set of creative parameters to work within. She first painted a self-portrait over her reflection in a one-way mirror while video recording so that the portrait obscured her reflection. Using the leftover paint from that process, she painted a self-portrait based on discussions she had with her grandmother, an Expressionist, about painting. Finally, she composed the final photograph using her self-portrait, her own body, mirrors, sculptures, and found objects from her studio.Acquisition
