A forlorn Charlie Brown with downcast eyes under a banner saying 'thinking of you'Context
This piece was included in "Grab Bag", an exhibition curated by Don Baum at the Hyde Park Art Center in 1994. I made a salon style installation of unframed works on paper. Around this time, I was making large scale paintings that recast Popeye, Olive Oyl, Charlie Brown, Lucy and others in a more down and out setting. Typically, alongside the paintings I would include these clusters of more intimate works on paper. In both "You Can't Take My Pride" and "Thinking of You", I sought to create a resonant friction between the text and the image. In "Thinking of You", I was invoking the language of store bought greeting cards. However, it would hardly be reassuring to know that this Charlie was thinking of you. He seems depressed and distracted, lost in regret.Acquisition
