Context

Chicago based artist Richard Rezac initiates his art as though it were literally architecture. Each geometric, abstracted form begins with a schematic, a drawing that anticipates the finished product by organizing the shapes and forms before bringing them to fruition. According to the artist, his work from 1980 onward is inspired by and quotes from architecture that spans geography and time, including early American, European modernism, Japanese, British neoclassical, and Italian Baroque. He prioritizes a “simple form with a legible silhouette and regular surface.” According to the artist, Untitled (12-09) references specific architectural elements most often seen in Greek classicism, evoking an entablature – the composition of horizontal elements immediately below the roofline – most formally connected by the rust-colored lintel. Rezac cites this classical influence as a result of a year at the American Academy in Rome.
