Context

Through the exploration of surrealist metaphysical environments, Michiko Itatani comes to terms with the convolutions of the 20th century in her works. With a celestially abstract style, Itatani places androgynous figures floating in swirling strata of color and pattern, engulfing and confusing the figures. Born in Osaka, Japan, Itatani came to America in 1970. Itatani’s Untitled (From Childhood’s End), 1994-97, rearranges limbs, hands, and feet and completely disfigures the forms. Moving away from black and white to warmer tones of brown and orange, the figures are seen reaching and flexing for support. In the center of the piece, a mushroom cloud-like form explodes upward into the space the figures are occupying lending itself to a commentary on the destruction of nuclear war and chaos. The lithograph was part of the Anchor Graphics 1995 Subscription Series which featured several Chicago artists.
