This piece was included in "Grab Bag", an exhibition curated by Don Baum at the Hyde Park Art Center in 1994. I made a salon style installation of unframed works on paper. Around this time, I was making large scale paintings that recast Popeye, Olive Oyl, Charlie Brown, Lucy and others in a more down and out setting. Typically, alongside the paintings I would include these clusters of more intimate works on paper. In both "You Can't Take My Pride" and "Thinking of You", I sought to create a resonant friction between the text and the image. In "Pride", the image of a bedraggled Lucy van Pelt hints at the possibility of a mugshot profile. It seems open to debate whether she has any reserve of pride to "take".Acquisition
