Sources of Indian Tradition : volume IIEntry/Object ID
DS423 .D33 1958 v.2Description
Here, in the second volume of "Sources of Indian Tradition", the editor brings together works that reflect Indian thought in the world today. Typical chapters include: "The Opening of India to the West"; "Nationalism Takes Root"; "Pakistan: Its Founding and Future"; and "Six Paths to India's Future." Recent movements, such as nationalism, liberalism, socialism, and the modern religious revivals, are also included. Among the great contemporary figures represented are Pammohun Roy, father of modern India; the gentle and saintly Ramakrishna, along with the fiery nationalist Tilak; Muhammad Iqbal, poet and philosopher of the Muslim revival; Tagore, Gandhi, and other leaders of the new India.
The readings, which deal with political, economic, and aesthetic questions as well as religious and philosophical speculations, consist of translations from Indian sources, most of them made especially for this work. This volume contains a chronological table of Indian history from 1498 to the present. --Rear Cover.
