Description

Lama Govinda shows not only what the ideas of early Buddhism were, but how they came into existence and why they took the form in which we now know them. It is a brilliant summary of Pali Buddhism, and in addition it constitutes a logical approach to the problems of Mahayana and Tantric philosophy which grew out of the consistent application of one and the same principle: the inter-relatedness and non-substantiality of all phenomena. The text is further clarified by the provision of a series of well-conceived diagrams, and a group of seven appendices with appropriate charts. The book forms a companion volume to Lama Govinda's "Foundations of Tibetan Mysticism". The two titles together, provide for the first time in the English language, a complete picture of the organic and systematic development of Buddhist thought from Vedic and Upanishadic times up to the Tantric period of Indian and Tibetan Buddhism. --Back Cover Contents: FIRST PART: THE ORIGIN OF RELIGION AND THE EARLY STAGES OF INDIAN THOUGHT The Age of Magic Anthropomorphic Universe and Polytheism The Problem of God The Problem of Man Summary SECOND PART: PSYCHOLOGY AND METAPHYSICS IN THE LIGHT OF THE ABHIDHAMMA The Two Types of Psychology The Importance of the Adhidhamma Metaphysics and Empiricism Truth and Method The Three Degrees of Knowledge THIRD PART: THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS AS STARTING POINT AND LOGICAL FRAME OF BUDDHIST PHILOSOPHY The Axiomatic Truth of Suffering The Cause of Suffering The Destruction of Suffering The Way of Liberation FOURTH PART: THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF CONSCIOUSNESS The Objects of Consciousness The Structure of Consciousness Classification of Consciousness The Four Types of 'Higher Man' and the Problem of Suffering FIFTH PART: THE FACTORS OF CONSCIOUSNESS (CETASIKA) The Primary of Constant Neutral Factors The Secondary Neutral Factors The Morally Decisive Factors and their Mutual Relations SIXTH PART: THE FUNCTIONS OF CONSCIOUSNESS AND THE PROCESS OF PERCEPTION The dynamic Nature of Consciousness and the Theory of Vibration The Functions of Consciousness and the Problem of Matter The Process of Perception APPENDIX INDEX
