The shrines of Tut-Ankh-AmonEntry/Object ID
BL2430 .S5 1962Description
The present volume contains the first translation of the hieroglyphic texts inscribed on the four gold-encrusted shrines that enclosed the sarcophagus of Tut-Ankh-Amon, ruler of Egypt in the 14th century B.C. The texts on the shrines consist of rituals and devotional inscriptions, including fragments of sacred books, and they contribute to a solution of many problems in the intricate religious system of the ancient Egyptians. The shrines, which were arranged one within another, are now in the Cairo Museum, together with the other priceless and beautiful funerary objects, a small selection of which has recently been exhibited in American Museums through the courtesy of the Government of the United Arab Republic.
This publication consists of an extensive introduction, a full translation of the texts, many diagrams of representations, and 67 plates illustrating the panels of the shrines. Alexandre Piankoff, eminent Egyptologist and philologist, is a member of the French Institute of Oriental Archaelogy at Cairo. He is in charge of the series of books on Egyptian Religious Texts and Representations published in Bollingen Series, of which this was originally a part. --Back cover
