Techau Tavern had many locations from 1870 when it was opened by a German immigrant R.J. Techau. By 1899 Techau had relocated the tavern to the Union Street area. It was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire, but rebuilt.

This 2012 document, an unsuccessful application for historic landmark status for a later bar at the Techau Tavern location ( 247 Powell/333 Geary), gives a detailed history of the Techau Tavern on p. 6-9.
