Description

Built in 1886 by Will and August Brann, the Brann Brothers' General Store carried everything early settlers needed. This building housed the entire Brann family including parents Jacob and Anna Brann. A larger store was erected across the street in 1903. This original building then served as a mortuary and casket storage. The Brann Brothers had an elegant hearse, drawn by Will's two race horses. Following the 1928 fire that destroyed the larger store on the lake, this original building was rented out as a tavern to a number of proprietors. It was purchased in 1940 by Paul and Viola Herbst who remodeled, adding a multi-colored glass bar, and began the Friday night fish fry tradition. The business continued as the Ridgely Tavern for four years until sold in 1986 to Rich and Sandy Weisgerber the current owners. (Located at 8123 State Highway 57, Baileys Harbor.)
