Alex J. Meunier, the donor's grandfather, ran for Door County sheriff during the Great Depression. Alex was competing with twenty three candidates. Because of the economic impact of the depression, competition among candidates was at an all time high, specifically because the sheriff's office was a consistent government job. Alex J. Meunier was elected sheriff in 1932/34 and served from 1933 to 1936. Alex would eventually become a Wisconsin State Assemblyman.Collection
