Early horse drawn funeral coach & processionEntry/Object ID
1997.14.0004Description
Early horse drawn funeral coach and procession somewhere in Door County. The location and date are unknown. The picture is grainy and faint and appears to be a picture taken from a newspaper. Made into a slide July 1976.
July 11, 2000 - A good photo of this coach is on display at the Door County Historical Museum with the following information: The funeral coach was purchased in 1896 by Henry Hahn when he bought out the undertaking business of F. X. Sailer on the east side of Sturgeon Bay, WI. Note the 5 fancy statues on the roof, which were still in style at that time. This is believed to have been only the 3rd horse drawn funeral hearse ever used in Door County, and is shown here during an actual funeral procession. F. X. Sailer bought the first horse drawn hearse in 1880. Eventually 8 horse drawn hearses would be in use by various funeral homes around the county. The Henry Hahn Funeral Home is the predecessor of the Davis Mortuary.Collection
