Oien Olson Home - North BayEntry/Object ID
2000.06.043Description
Oien (Sam) Olson, the first permanent resident of North Bay, arrived in the United states at age 17. Born in Gjellse, Stavanger, Norway, he made his way to Ephraim, WI in 1867. In the early 1870's, after discovering the completely virgin lands and waters of North Bay, he decided to make his home there. He purchased homestead land and built a log cabin in 1870 which still stands today. All was primeval wilderness and the Potawatomi Indians were encamped along the shore. This house, built by Oien in 1884, at a cost of $300 still stands today, carefully preserved, with a strong desire to keep its authentic wilderness theme by the present owners. This is a private home located at 9350 County Highway Q, Baileys Harbor.Collection
