Description

Hand-made wooden sled with metal runners to be used on ice for fishing on Sturgeon Bay: this sled was made by John Joseph Draeb. He emigrated with his family in 1858 from the Bohemian part of the Czech Republic. They first settled in Pennsylvania. Later, they moved to Wisconsin where other Bohemians were living. He became a carpenter and built several homes in the north side of Sturgeon Bay. He supplemented his income by fishing off a pier where Stone Harbor now stands (2017). He had four sons. William had a furniture store in Kewaunee; George and John had jewelry stores in Sturgeon Bay; August attended the University of Wisconsin and became an attorney. He later moved to North Dakota. John Joseph also had three daughters; Mae, Lucy and Lotte. John was killed by an automobile while walking to work at the Alpine (Egg Harbor) in 1927. [Written by Joan Draeb]
