Description

St. Aloysius Institute - Institute School. Institute was named for this school. The school was completed in 1892 and named St. Aloysius (Alois) Institute. Built by the S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic congregation in Sevastopol, primarily to prepare the children of Door County for First Communion, the school also included dormatory facilities for 40 boarding students. Children came from Milwaukee, Chicago, and Michigan to attend the "Institute". Many were orphans, or came from single parent homes. Room and board was $4 per month. In the late 1890's, the sisters that ran the school also ran the post office. Letters came addressed to the "Sister's Institute" - even after the post office moved to a local tavern. Custom and usage slowly changed the name of the Sevastopol community to simply Institute. In 1920, the Institute discontinued its boarding school program and became the parish day school, S.S. Peter and Paul school. The original "Institute" building was replaced in 1953 by the present school building. (This history is from the Friday, Oct. 23, 1987 issue of the Door County Advocate.)
