State Fish Hatchery. The building was on what is now South Third Ave., just south of Quincy, on the west side of the street. The 1916 City Directory lists it at 229 S. Cedar with Frank Suthers, Manager. The 1938 City Directory lists it as 329 S. Cedar, just south of Spring Street with Matt Patterson as manager. This picture appeared in the Friday, Nov. 20, 1914 issue of the Door County Democrat with the following caption: When the season closed Sunday for taking trout eggs, it found the Sturgeon Bay fish hatchery with everything filled, it having been the biggest season for gathering lake trout spawn since the Wisconsin Fish Commission was created. Supt. Suthers of the local hatchery stated that they have between twenty-two and twenty-five million eggs in the hatchery, all gathered in this vicinity, while last year they had only eighteen million, and three million of these were brought here from Sheboygan.
