Ticuna Hooded Mask

Description

Bark cloth and wood mask with natural dye decorations painted on the left side of the cloth on top of the head and on the shoulder. The mask has large bark cloth ears sewn on. There are pencil lines and some light lines cut in to the forehead that gives the appearance that the mask was not finished.

Use

During a funeral ceremony, dancers (all men) wear masks like this one. The bark cloth hood usually goes over the top of a dancer’s head and the mask rests on his forehead so that he can see through the porous cloth or through the eyes of the carving.
