Coiled Basket

Name/Title

Tubatulabal Storage Jar

Description

A very unusual basket- it appears to have been made by two people- the lower half is poorly made but upper half is expertly made. Design materials change as they go up: lowest row of rectangles is all redbud; second row has one coil of bracken fern; third fourth, fifth and sixth rows have two coils of black each. The rim is outstanding, with alternating stitches of sedge and bracken fern.

Coiled Contruction Notes

The stitches in the lower half give the appearance that the basket coils to the left, but the upper portion and coil finish are clearly to the right.
