Rio Grande Blanket

Description

Blanket woven on an old narrow style loom, in once piece with two paired warps in the center. There are wide white bands at either end, followed by several narrow bands, another wide white band. The central portion has a narrow black border on the top and bottom, with the side borders being a complex serrate of black and red. The central design consists of a series of concentric diamonds in black, deep red, white, and lighter red, within a field of white.

The red color is probably cochineal dyed, while the black and white are probably natural wool colors. This is a particularly soft textile. As can be seen on the photo of the central diamonds, the outer red diamond is a lighter color than the inner red diamond.
