Pennsylvanian glassmaker Bernard Simon patented the original “George Washington” bust bottle to hold bitters (an alcoholic preparation containing herbs) and exhibited his bottles at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876. However, this example may actually have been made in the 20th century by the Clevenger Brothers of Clayton, New Jersey, who marketed affordable glass reproductions.

This bottle was likely made at the Clevenger Brother Glass Company using the fine sands found on South Jersey beaches. A prominent seam bisecting the bottle indicates that the object was made by heating the sand mixture and pouring it into a two-part mold.
