Alexander Calder (1898-1976) was an American sculptor and artist known as the originator of the mobile and is one of the most important artists of the 20th century. The Calder family had many artists and is closely linked to Philadelphia. His grandfather, Alexander Milne Calder, immigrated to Philadelphia in 1868, and is best known for the statue of William Penn on top of City Hall and his father. Alexander Stirling Calder, taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and created many public installations in Philadelphia.
