Frank Schoonover was born in Oxford, New Jersey in 1877 and died in Wilmington, Delaware in
1972. He studied at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry under Howard Pyle from
1896 to 1900. Schoonover, in his over 60-year career, went on to garner national acclaim for his
illustrations and professional work.
Frank Schoonover’s works are some of only a few pieces collected by The Drexel Collection that
were created by an alumnus of the university. These recently donated illustrations were drawn
while Schoonover was a student here at Drexel working on model and costume studies on the 4th
floor of the Main Building. The inclusion of these pieces in The Drexel Collection highlights the
rich artistic history of Drexel University.
