North Chinese porcelains, known as Xing wares, were first manufactured in Hebei province during the second half of the Tang dynasty (618-906), within efficient, cross-draft kilns, fired in a reducing atmosphere (less oxygen) at temperatures of up to 1350°C. Tang dynasty Xing wares were also exported to West Asia where they were greatly valued. 'Xing-type' ceramics subsequently went into production at kilns across Hebei and Henan provinces, serving a network of regional markets that welcomed fine white ceramics imitating the forms of more expensive silver vessels. This stand would have supported a separate wine or food bowl, made of silver, lacquer or porcelain. Gift of Brian M. Salzberg, PhD.
