Margaret Castex-Sturgis graduated from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1915 and interned at the New York Infirmary for Women and Children. In 1916 she was appointed to a surgical residency at New York Hospital, the first woman to serve in this capacity.
Returning to Philadelphia in 1919, she joined the faculty of the College as Assistant Clinical Professor of Gynecology. Serving continuously from that time, Dr. Sturgis was appointed Professor and Chairman in the Department of Gynecology in 1942, a position she held until 1946, when she became Professor Emerita of Gynecology.
Dr. Sturgis was President of the Alumnae Association from 1926 to 1928 and a member of the Board of Corporators from 1949 to 1956. She collaborated with Drs. Catharine Macfarlane and Faith Fetterman in founding the cancer detection clinic at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1938. The clinic saved the lives of many women and was the first of its kind in Philadelphia.
