Maurice C. Clifford, M.D. joined the faculty of the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1955. He rose in academic rank to Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology while maintaining a private practice in the field. In 1978, he was named Vice President of Medical Affairs, one year later he became Acting President, and in 1980 he was elected the seventeenth President of the Medical College of Pennsylvania. During his tenure, the College was awarded the management contract for the Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute, which transformed it into a nationally recognized center for patient care, research and training. Under his vigorous leadership, a long-deferred building project became a reality, culminating in the 1986 opening of the Patient Care Pavilion.
Dr. Clifford left the College in 1986 to accept the position of Commissioner of Public Health for the City of Philadelphia. He continued to serve on the College’s Board of Directors.
