Hartwig Kuhlenbeck, M.D., Ph.D., was born and educated in Germany. He received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1920 and medical degree in 1922. Except for a brief excursion into clinical medicine, Dr. Kuhlenbeck spent the next thirteen years in anatomical institutes in Germany pursuing his interest in the evolution, structure, and function of the brain.
In 1933, he came to the United States and was appointed to the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania. Two years later, he became Professor and Chairman of the Department of Anatomy at the Woman’s Medical College. During World War II, Dr. Kuhlenbeck served as a captain and major in the United States Army. After the war, he returned to the College to teach. In 1963, he relinquished his teaching responsibilities and was appointed Research Professor.
Dr. Kuhlenbeck authored hundreds of scientific papers as well as a seven-volume work on the comparative neuroanatomy of the vertebrates and two three-volume works on the human brain.
In 1965, Dr. Kuhlenbeck was granted an honorary degree from the College and in 1971 was named Professor Emeritus of Anatomy.
