Born and raised in Philadelphia, Dr. Labovitz graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls and from Temple University. She taught in Philadelphia schools from 1953 to 1959, and then entered the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, earning her medical degree in 1963. After medical residency and fellowship training in nephrology, she joined the College faculty, serving in the Renal Division and advancing to the rank of Associate Professor of Medicine.
Teacher, clinician, academician, she was honored by her students with the Golden Apple Award in 1971 and again in 1982, and received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1973.
Known for her honest, intellectual integrity, and capacity for hard work, she demanded as much from students as from herself. This portrait depicts in composite form her beloved home in Bucks County, her work, her hobbies, and her achievements.
