Clara Marshall grew up in an intellectually spirited Quaker atmosphere where the expectation for women was high. An 1875 graduate of the Woman’s Medical College, she began her teaching career as an instructor and in 1876 advanced to the Chair of Materia Medica and Therapeutics. She was appointed to the teaching staff at the Philadelphia General Hospital, where she lectured to large classes of male medical students – a singular honor at the turn of the century.
Dr. Marshall served as Dean of the Woman’s Medical College from 1888 until 1917. During her administration, the College opened a new facility, the Hospital of the Woman’s Medical College. Under Dean Marshall’s leadership, entrance requirements became more demanding, the curriculum was broadened and the course of study was extended. The faculty grew, and many women held professional rank.
