Born and raised in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, Dr. Bartuska graduated from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1954, then served her internship and residency there. An endocrinologist, she joined the faculty in 1958, was an Associate Dean for Curriculum, President of the Medical Staff, a member of the Board of Directors and President of the Alumni Association. She was the Director of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism as well as the Endocrine Fellowship Training Program at WMC/MCP while Professor of Medicine. Dr. Bartuska, an exemplary educator, clinician and researcher, was named Emeritus Professor of Medicine in Endocrinology at Drexel University College of Medicine in 1996. Her work continued as a consultant in endocrine and rare metabolic disorders, as well as the genetic endocrinopathies, aging, osteoperosis, and thyroid diseases.
Dr. Bartuska’s influence extended beyond her alma mater into several leadership roles: She was active in the American Medical Women’s Association, and served as President in 1987 to 1988. Dr. Bartuska was one of the few women elected as President of the Philadelphia County Medical Society. She played key roles in the Pennsylvania Medical Society and was awarded its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award in 2008. Among her many other honors are the Strittmatter Award, the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, and the Alumnae Achievement Award. She was also named an Outstanding Educator of America and a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania, and participated in the President’s Forum on Physicians and Social Responsibility. A nationally known and tireless advocate for women in medicine and women’s health, her research and advocacy focused primarily on issues relating to women.
