Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot’s greatest success came with landscapes evoking an Arcadian past, or ideal rural paradise, with its silvery, soft- edged style. His style is often defined as “atmospheric landscapes peppered with architectural and biblical characters.” Corot devoted the early years of his career to the direct study of nature and traveled to Italy to master painting light and atmospheric effects.
