Luis Jimenez Aranda was born into a family of artists in Seville, Spain. Introduced to painting by his older brother, his early work is within the ‘Costumbrismo genre’, celebrating Spanish customs and traditions. But by 1874, after studying the Old Masters in Rome for several years, Jimenez Aranda moved to Paris, then to Pontoise, and his work began to change. Still rooted in realism, Jimenez Aranda’s style became looser and more naturalistic showing the influence of the Barbizon painters, forerunners of the Impressionists. In France, Aranda had found a home - he became a naturalized French citizen in 1877 and stayed in Pontoise for the following 50 years.

Luis Jimenez Aranda was born in Seville, Spain, and spent many years in Italy, ultimately settling in France. This painting was done during his stay in Italy but is a scene of his native Spain. Aranda is known for his interest in detail, texture and his prominence in Seville as upholding the Romanticism tradition, focusing on emotions and the senses, examining the human personality, over the strict order and calm typified by the earlier movements of Classicism and Neoclassicism.
