Barbara Schindler graduated from the last class of the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1970. She remained at the Medical College of Pennsylvania for an internship in Internal Medicine/Pediatrics followed by a residency in Psychiatry and a fellowship in Child Psychiatry. As Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, Dr. Schindler held many academic and administrative positions at her alma mater, including Chief of the Division of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Acting Chair of Psychiatry. She also served as President of the Alumnae/i Association and as Chair of the Association’s Special Trust Fund dedicated to supporting women in medicine. Outside the medical school she was active in many local and national academic organizations. Dr. Schindler co-founded the Caring Together Program in 1990, dedicated to providing high quality outpatient care for women with addictions and their children. In 1996 she was appointed Vice Dean for Academic and Educational Affairs, a position she held for 18 years. In this position she provided steady growth and leadership, stewarding the medical school through several successful accreditations, and was instrumental in guiding the school through its transition to Drexel University College of Medicine. Dr. Schindler’s commitment to quality and innovation in medical education was recognized by her appointment as the William Maul Measey Chair in Medical Education in 2008 and by her selection as a member of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education in 2014. Among many awards and honors, Dr. Schindler received the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award, the Presidential Award of the Philadelphia Psychiatric Society, the Commonwealth Board Award, and the Alumni Association's Lifetime Achievement Award.
