Initially trained as an Episcopal minister, Matthew Semple gave up his career as a well-respected clergyman to attend medical school. Trained in “regular” medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, he became intrigued with homeopathy early in his career. One of Hahnemann’s founders, Dr. Jacob Jeanes, was his mentor and lifelong friend. Among the first faculty at Hahnemann, Dr. Semple taught chemistry and toxicology from the College’s inception in 1848 through 1856. He also taught chemistry at the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania from 1859 to 1864, serving for some of that time as Chair of the Chemistry Department. His expertise and interest in homeopathy found him teaching at the Homeopathic Medical College of New York as well. A beloved professor and colleague, this portrait of Professor Semple was presented to Hahnemann in 1895.
