Amos R. Thomas is an important figure in the history of Hahnemann Medical College. An 1854 graduate of Syracuse Medical College, Thomas undertook additional coursework at Pennsylvania Medical University, earning a degree there as well. He was appointed Chair of Anatomy at this alma mater in 1856, a position he held for ten years. At the same time, he was appointed Lecturer in Artistic Anatomy at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and later at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, now Moore College of Art and Design. These were the first lectures of this kind in the United States. Dr. Thomas also served in the Civil War, attending soldiers at Armory Square Hospital in Washington, D.C. A native of New York, Thomas had adopted the system of homeopathy shortly after he came to Philadelphia. He had a large practice, published regularly, and was General Editor of the American Journal of Homeopathic Materia Medica. In 1867 he became the Chair of Anatomy at the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania (later, Hahnemann), a position he held for twenty-seven years. Appointed Dean in 1874, Dr. Thomas is credited with expanding Hahnemann’s curriculum and the length of course work, as well as being largely responsible for building the College and Hospital on Broad Street.
