Tokujiro Nishi was a 20th century Japanese artist who began his studies under Masao Hato, founder of the Sakujutsu-Kai, an artist group created to keep the tradition of oil painting alive in Japan. The temple depicted is a seventh-century temple and one of Japan’s oldest. It was constucted by Emperor Tenmu for the recovery of his sick wife. The colors Nishi used reflect the actual colors of the temple and the thick impasto echos the works of the French painters styles introduced to Japan in 1878.
