Ferdinand Victoire Leon Roybet was born in the small town of Uzes in France and first studied to be an engraver at Lyons. While on an extensive trip to Holland, he made copies of paintings by Frans Hals and Rembrandt, all of which inspired this painting of a swaggering 17th century-style cavalier in a green velvet suit with red shoulder bag (or sword sling) and sword.
