Henri Dupray was born in the garrison town of Sedan and planned to be a soldier until he was badly injured falling from a horse while still a teenager. He then turned his artistic talents to good use and specialized in military subjects, the popularity of which was fueled by the rise of French nationalism after the country’s humiliating defeat in the Franco-Prussian War.
