Dr. Cooper earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1942. Following Army medical service in World War II, and a residency in Michigan, he joined the Medical College of Pennsylvania faculty in 1950. He chaired the Department of Surgery from 1959 to 1981, expanding the department to include full-time faculty. In 1981 he was appointed Vice President and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at MCP. He also taught at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Medicine until his retirement in 1987.
A respected leader in surgery, Dr. Cooper served as President of the Academy of Surgery from 1978 to 1980, and on the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons. His extensive writings included pioneering work on electrolyte balance in trauma and surgery, and fluid resuscitation in trauma.
