Émile Van Marcke De Lummen was born in Sèvres, France, to Dutch parents and became the premier animal painter of his time (in addition to painting for the Sèvres porcelain manufacturer). He was greatly influenced by the plentiful countryside, although in his paintings the animals are always primary, and the landscape subordinate.
