After Napoleon Bonaparte’s invasion of Egypt and Syria in 1798-1801, European interest in the region grew and many artists found it lucrative to depict these exotic places. The passion for this kind of subject became known as Orientalism, since what we now call the Middle East was then simply viewed as the Orient. There was even a Society of Orientalist Painters to which the painter of this very typical scene may well have belonged.
