Oswald Achenbach was a well-known German painter who studied and taught at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. He spent much of his life tied to the art scene of that city but took numerous trips throughout Europe between 1843 and 1845. Italy made an impression on him, and the scenes and architecture of that country featured prominently in his work throughout the rest of his life.
